If it did not work properly.....

The hippocampus is one of the most important parts of your brain. If you didn't have one, you could not remember anything. If it no longer worked properly you could develop epilepsy or loss of memory. Shrinking of the hippocampus is related to schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease, post traumatic stress disorder, and severe depression. Alzheimer's disease causes too little blood flow in the hippocampus which leads to injury of this part of the brain.

3 Interesting Facts!
  1. Aerobic exercise increases the size of the hippocampus.
  2. Mammals have the hippocampus but other animals, like fish, do not. They have a brain structure called the pallium that has similar functions.
  3. The word "hippocampus" originates from the latin words for horse (hippo) and sea monster (kampus) because early scientists thought it looked like a seahorse.
